Early Wake-Ups?

Ok, this was the second morning in a row that Avery woke up at 5:30. That is early! And it's not like she woke up and went back to sleep after a little breakfast milk. No, she was up and happily played with my headlamp as I tried to figure out what day it was. Have either of you dealt with this? I'm so used to a nice 6:30 wake up call that this has thrown me for a loop.

I'm blaming it on her teething and maybe a little hunger because she didn't want dinner last night. And that's the thing. She doesn't seem as hungry when she teethes. So, it's like a catch-22. I think she might wake up due to hunger. But, then her body doesn't/can't (?) get back to sleep and rest until a comfortable 8 am.

Hope your teething babies are doing well.

  1. Missy, we had this problem for a while too. What we would do is...for a couple of nights, lay Cole back down with his binkie and blanket until he went back to sleep until the time he would normally wake up. (Re-establishing a schedule.) Sometimes we'll give him medicine if he's acting like he's in pain and try to lay him back down.

If she's hungry though, that makes it tough. I would always makes sure she is not hungry, wet or in pain before I try to put her back down. (But I know you know that)

I don't know. We've had serious napping issues because of teeth. For his afternoon nap today, I stuck to my guns and layed him back down over and over until his normal nap time was over...but he never slept. He did rest though, and we were keeping to our routine because I knew he was OK.

This is one of the hardest things I've experienced with motherhood...Cole not sleeping. It seems to get better, and then go back to chaos. Just remember, teething will throw off your routine. Eventually it will get back to normal. Sorry you're up sooooo early.

  2. I think we have the opposite problem right now. Izzy not wanting to go to sleep. It is so frustrating. Every night has been a struggle since Friday. This weekend her schedule was so thrown off that she was taking late naps and not going to bed until 9.30pm. Last night I just left her in there at 7.30 and she eventually went to sleep. Her bedtime is usually 7pm.

I think sleeping issues have been a problem for all three us. I blame Iz's problems on teething too. And also maybe jet lag, even though we've been home for a couple weeks.

It's the worst when they are happily up that early, because you know getting back to sleep is impossible. Poor you. 5.30am is way too early for a mom to start the day.

Dr Weissbluth says maybe to make the bedtime earlier? I don't know. I just read what he said. Let us know how it goes. You must be exhausted.

  3. Not sleeping and eating are two of the huge signs that Cole shows when he gets an ear infection. It's pretty common with new teeth. Maybe you want to get that checked??

  4. I'm wondering if it could be an ear infection now. She has not been wanting to eat (solids) very much and last night she was up at 10:30 and 2:30 and 3:40-4:30. Weird. I can see her tooth bumping, but it hasn't broken the skin yet. Could it be an ear infection?
Thanks for the tip Lindsey on going to be early. But, her bedtime is 6:30. She usually sleeps 6:30-6 or 6:30. Should I make it earlier? She took two naps yesterday so I thought her 6:30 bedtime was appropriate.
I'm sorry she's taking late naps. That's strange. And doesn't it make your whole evening harder when they go to bed later?
