tomorrow is...

St. Patricks day! One of my favorite holidays. Weird I know, but my mom always made it a big deal, and we've continued on the tradition with our kids, so they love it and look forward to it too.

I thought I'd share my favorite traditions of the day..

*the kids wake up to find tiny leprechaun feet dancing across the entire house. They must follow the tiny feet to find their treasure.

*at the end of the leprechaun feet they find a package full of green. Every year I find and collect different green things, this can range from bubbles to candy to toys to clothes. It just depends on what strikes my fancy...

I never leave out the Mister, some years his package is with the kids', some years it's at his office, last year it was waiting for him in his car.

My mom did this for us every year, and just as we've continued on the morning tradition, we've continued on her evening tradition as well. The St. Patricks day dinner! Everything is green and the kids go crazy. They love it!

We usually have corn beef and cabbage as the main coarse with green mashed potatoes, green bread, green salad, peas, grapes, green jell-o, green drink (this varies from year to year but the favorite is lime sherbet and sprite) and some kind of green dessert (this could include key-lime pie, green frosted sugar cookies or cupcakes, green donuts, etc).

And of course what would the day be without wearing green? We always wear green.

What are your favorite St. Patrick's Day traditions?

maternity photos.

Maternity photos. What do you think of them? Are they an absolute for you? Or do you shy away from the camera especially when pregnant? I have never done maternity photos, I haven't ever wanted them, but when I saw the picture above I loved it. I want a picture like that. And so I feel torn, with no real pictures of the other pregnancies, should I be taking pictures of this one? I think I love this one because it wouldn't show my bare belly that is not so attractive or my swollen nose, and yet I am still debating.

Etsy Love

When I heard about esty a couple years ago, my reactions was, “FINALLY!! I have somewhere to sell my things on my terms!” As one of those truly obsessed crafters, I had more desire to make than I had need of things made. And I wanted to combine my handmade passions with making money (mostly to subsidize my yarn and fabric habits). Before etsy, my options were participate in boutiques that were not at all my style or desire, or peddle around my wares to boutiques where I’d have to wholesale them for less than they were worth and watch the boutique mark them up to much more than they were worth. I wanted nothing to do with either route.

Etsy, though, was a perfect fit for me. It gave me a place to do what I wanted, at the pace I could handle doing it. I had a good readership going on my blog, and I knew that people wanted what I had been showing there everyday. My first shop update sold out that day and it was so validating and confidence building. I believe in buying handmade, and it continues to make me incredibly happy to participate in what etsy is doing, now over two years later.

I often get emails from other moms wanting to do what I am doing, and asking for tips and from current etsy sellers who are struggling to make sales looking for help getting their store rolling. I decided to write down my best advice for those of you who are in either of those categories, and want a little help: 1. My blog is vital to my sales. Etsy is still new enough that the people selling outnumber the people buying. Meaning, etsy itself doesn’t have enough people just clicking around looking to purchase something. I would estimate that 95% of my sales come from blog readers who clicked over to my shop specifically to make a purchase. Rarely, I have a purchase from someone searching on etsy. Advice from my personal experience, then, is that a frequently updated and thoughtfully presented blog is priority number one.

2. The proper order of things is: you make cool stuff that people want, and then you decide to begin selling it on etsy (or elsewhere) rather than deciding to open a shop and then figuring out what to make. Those of us passionate about the handmade will tell you that originality and good design are what sell, and you can’t fake that. If you are looking to make some money and see that others are doing it this way, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the way for you to do it. Be creative with what your talents and skills are, and really decide if handmade is your real passion and strength before opening an etsy shop, if you want to be successful.

3. As a busy mom, I wasn’t looking for something that runs me, but rather, something to do on my own terms. There are a lot of shops out there that sell adorable small crafts and supplies at a low price point with a high volume of sales. I couldn’t handle that kind of daily work. I chose to work things like this: every month or so I update the shop, and hope it all sells! I make usually one of a kinds at a higher price point, making for less shipping, posting, emailing, etc. which is where most of the not enjoyable parts of the work lie for me. I think updating less (I don’t have time to do more even if I wanted to), and more special items have both worked to my advantage. Know yourself and what you can handle.

4. TAKE GOOD PICTURES!! When people shop online, they are purchasing a picture, not a real product. They don’t get to touch and hold the product, so the image has to sell them. Whenever I see poorly lit or unattractive photos it turns me off to the product, no matter how otherwise desirable it is. You don’t need to be a photographer to know the basics of light and composition. Just do an internet search or go to the library for information and practice. You also don’t need an expensive camera to take a well composed photo. But, after getting into picture taking a little bit, you might be obsessed and absolutely need a nice camera, I’m warning you!!

5. Advertise if you need to. With the current blogging trend of getting blog “sponsers” for well-trafficked blog, it’s a great opportunity to generate some interest in what you’re doing. I haven’t tried this yet, but I’m thinking when my daughter heads to kindergarten soon and I have more time to make things, this might be a good way to go.

6. Be gracious. Answer emails promptly, ship promptly, and be a part of the online handmade community in a positive way. I love love getting repeat customers (which account for a high percentage of my sales), because it means I did something right. Be respectful of copyright laws and don’t do shady things like slightly changing another’s design. Crafting integrity brings good selling karma!

I hope this was useful to someone! I love what I do, creating and being able to share those creations has been a wonderful part of my life. I know many of you probably know what I mean, and there are more who’d like to try. In the end, what do you have to lose? Go for it! And good luck!!

Speaking of handmade, come back later this week for some giveaway treats!!

We've been contemplating re-doing our bedroom and I really want this bedding in natural. Would cream bedding be a disaster with small children?

make-up must haves.

I must admit I am pretty boring when it comes to make-up and getting ready but I have a few things that I absolutely could not live without. That is on the rare occasion I make it past a shower and pony tail.

The Shiseido eyelash curler is hands down the best that is out there. I promise. I have tried many and this is the only one that works every time, doesn't pinch or kink your lashes and it has never once pinched my eyelid or hurt. It has to be one of my all time best beauty products.

My favorite of mascara I've used to date. I have tried other brands and always end up back with my trusty Lancome DEFINCILS. No clumps, spider lash or Tammy Faye, just long, pretty lashes. Perfect.

If you have children this is a must have. The absolute best in covering under-eye circles. No cakey build up, just clean and bright. Seriously you'll thank me.

And of course, life would not be complete without a little gloss. The minty freshness was enough to convert me on it's own, but the colors are subtle, the gloss not too thick, and it wears well.

Like I said, I am not very adventurous in the make-up department, so I'd love to hear your must haves and favorites. It's always nice to know what other moms consider their lifesaving products.

so long, farewell.

Today all three posts are from Kelly, the amazing guest blogger we've had here for the month. I've loved having her here, her ideas, her thoughts. It's been a nice breath of fresh air. Today she's got some big questions for you and we'd both love your feed back. Thanks Kelly! I hope you loved your time here as much as I loved having you!

i just want to say thank you to all of you wonderful people. i have so enjoyed my time here at tangled & true. it's been fun sharing a "bit of me" with each of you. if you miss me, feel free to visit me at according to kelly or just spotted, i'd love to hear from you! with that, i'd like to leave you with one of my all-time favorite quotes, hopefully it will give you a little something to think about:
life isn't a destination - it's a journey. we all come upon unexpected curves & turning points, mountaintops & valleys. everything that happens to us shapes who we are becoming. and in the adventure of each day, we discover the best in ourselves. -anonymous.

so here's a question...

how much do you pay your baby sitter? since jeff & i have had our little kidlets, we haven't done much "dating." we've made it out the door without any children thanks to our wonderful parents who babysit occasionally. but other than, we don't really get out much. but this past weekend a baby sitter was hired & we went to the movies with my mom and some family friends. on the drive home, we started wondering, how much do we pay? you want to pay enough so that they will want to come back, but you don't want to break the bank... so, how much do you pay your baby sitter?

xoxo, K

I've been doing some thinking.

this morning my nano was missing, (more than likely the work of two little boys.) resulting in the opportunity for me to do a lot of thinking on my morning run. as they say in beauty & the beast "a dangerous past time, i know"... but, today, i probably needed it. lately i've been feeling a bit overwhelmed & i thought the time to ponder & self-reflect might do me some good - i might be able to come up with some solutions. yeah, it didn't really work up out like i planned. i'm still at a total loss & so i turn to you. how do you manage life? okay, i'll admit, that's very broad & a little vague. like all of you, i've got a lot going on in life. someone might look at me & see simply a mother or a wife, but there's definitely more to me than that. i'm also an accountant, cook, daughter, concierge, laundress, sister, secretary, entrepreuner, nanny, therapist, seamstress, friend, chaffeur, director of business development, gardener, personal dresser, decorator, handyman, dog walker, teacher, maid... & those are just the titles that spring to mind quickly. the point being, as i mentioned earlier, i'm feeling a bit overwhelmed. and don't get me wrong, i LOVE my life & wouldn't change it for the world. i'm not at all complaining, i just need help learning to manage it all. i mean, let's be honest here... i only have two kids, neither of them are in school & our only extra-curricular activity is swimming. in a couple of years i may (or may not) have a whole herd of children, i'm sure one or two will be in school & i'm almost 99% sure i'll be driving them to a whole slew of activities. so if i feel like i'm dropping the ball now, i don't even want to think about what it's going to be like then. so what are your thoughts? suggestions? any self-help books i should read?

& while we're on the subject... a little bit of an off-shoot what i'd like to explore involves blogging. more specifically, how do you manage the whole blogging aspect of life? for example, for me blogging is definitely addicitive. i love having a place where i can post my "thoughts & ramblings about life." i love being able to conncect with people - friends, family & people i never would have otherwise met. i love being exposed to new & inspiring ideas & i love the connection i feel to the world around me. but, like everything in life, blogging does come without it's downside. lately i've been using a reader, definitely a handy little tool, but sometimes it can get overwhelming (for lack of a better word) when i sign in & i have 250 new posts to read. plus, i've found myself getting lazy when it comes to commenting, because it takes a little bit more effort. &, as much as i love reading blogs, i have to be careful. for one thing, it's so easy to go click, click, click & suddenly i've wasted hours, just staring at the computer. not to mention, if i let them, sometimes reading blogs can leave me feeling like i suck. (maybe you know the feeling? you aren't talented or creative enough? or you feel like a crappy mom, wife or friend?) anyway i've totally digressed. basically, i'm just interested in how you like to blog. do you post only when the mood strikes? do you read blogs daily, several times a day, a couple times a week? do you like to comment are you a lurker? what are you're favorite things about blogging? anything you dislike about it?

oh wow! this post is much longer & much more intense than i ever intended. hopefully i'll find my nano & will be able to avoid further thinking. in the meantime, what your thoughts on the subject(s)?

xoxo,K

gift giving.

We've received a lot of birthday invitations this spring/summer as well as having some birthday's of our own, but the question that continually weighs on my mind is, what is a good present to take to a child's birthday party? How much is too much to spend, what is excessive, what is not enough? I am not convinced I know the answer. Is it a toy that they will play with a few times and then it breaks, an outfit or accessory that isn't very fun to open but may be well used, art supplies or a craft.. what are your favorite birthday gifts to have your child give and what are the ones you most enjoy your child receiving?

keeping warm.

have you ever been given a gift that didn't just tug at your heart strings, but pulled & pulled them hard? several years ago i got married... i remember we were at a bridal shower for me. surrounded by many of our nearest & dearest. the next gift in the pile read "love, mom", & i was excited to see what she had chosen for me. a waffle iron? that kitchen-aid i'd been eyeing? bed linens? towels perhaps? you never know what you're going to get from my mom, she's always liked surprising us kids. so, when the present finally arrived in my lap, i tore into it, as eager as a child on christmas morning. totally expecting some BIG item off my registry, you can imagine my surprise when i found a blanket beneath all that beautiful wrapping paper. that surprise quickly changed to joy, love & a plethora of other feelings as i realized what i was holding. i had known she had been working on a special project, but i had had no idea it would be this. (click on picture to enlarge)

now, to the untrained eye, this appears to be simply a blanket, you might even go so far as to call it a quilt. but if you were to really study it, you would realize that it is made of clothes. you might even notice a clothing label or two, perhaps a shirt pocket, a couple of buttons, even a logo or two. and to you, the untrained eye, this might seem a bit odd. but for me, a soon-to-be-bride, it meant the world. for each & every square, each piece of clothing portrayed a memory. there were the pjs my dad wore nearly every day, his work shirts & golf shirts, bits of the shirts he wore to church on sundays... pieces of his life. (click on picture to enlarge)

and once you realize & understand that i knew my dad wouldn't be there with me, celebrating my big day, having this quilt, meant that i would always have a piece of him with me, & that meant more than anything, i'll ever be able to put into words.

just recently, actually for christmas, gavin & owen each received their own special blankets from my mom. once again, the gifts were a total surprise. this time around instead of using clothes, her medium was photos. using pictures of everyone in our family (that she had printed on fabric), she made the boys (& my niece kate too) their own patchwork blankets. the kids spend a little time, every day, just looking, pointing & naming everyone in each of the pictures. now, even though we don't live as close as we like, we always have family with us. (click on picture to enlarge)

it's been said that "our lives are like quilts - bit & pieces, joy and sorrow, stitched with love." i for one definitely agree, & have at least three quilts to prove it.

xoxo, K

If you're in the market for a new clutch, Piperlime is having a great sale on Hobo International. I'm considering the orange one but the yellow is a close second.
