Not such a silly idea: silicone bibs by silikids. Designed to lie flat on your little one's chest, this soft, wipe-away material is a welcome change from stained cloth or grubby plastic.
They are hypo allergenic, dishwasher safe and so cool. I think it's bright {although I think I would miss the standard catch all pocket}. $19.95 for no more messy.
